montbelloThe Boys Hope Girls Hope Academy program had an exciting and busy month of April, both for the scholars and staff.  April contains the most amount of school days, which gave our scholars ample opportunities to work and study hard.  Our scholars not only continued their commitment in class but have worked to better their community volunteering with the residential scholars for National Day of Service at Montbello Park.  The Academy scholars also had the opportunity to go snow shoeing at Rocky Mountain National Park, attend lectures, meet with professionals in the community, as well as participating in a career exploration event.

Although the scholars were hard at work, they weren’t the only ones busy in the month of April.  The BHGH staff worked diligently throughout the month to develop the new cohort of scholars who will join the 22 current scholars this summer.  The academy staff worked with local middle schools in the Aurora Central area to identify their schools’ motivated and driven students, to join the great bunch of scholars we already serve.  These scholar candidates were nominated, reviewed, interviewed and by the end of May we will have made a decision on which students will be joining the BHGH family.

Laelani - Mines
Laelani will be attending the Colorado School of Mines SUMMET program this summer

We have a busy summer planned for our Academy scholars.  We will meet with scholars twice a week in the morning focusing on academics, especially writing skills.  If you know someone who can teach a writing seminar, please contact us at 720-524-2061.  The afternoons will be fun activities.  Some of the scholars will be caddying either through the Solich Leadership Academy or Cherry Creek Country Club.  Others are attending the American Youth Foundation’s Leadership camp in Michigan.  Others will be doing Business Week with Junior Achievement.  We are proud that two scholars were accepted to the Colorado School of Mines SUMMET program, a science and engineering program combining course work, hands-on projects, industry tours, sporting activities and social events.

We are extremely proud to be able to impact the lives of these new young men and women, and we will be excited to see our current scholars embrace them and guide them on their journey to becoming successful adults.  We look forward to introducing the new scholars to you all soon.
