A new year brings new energy and opportunity to the Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado’s residential program. The scholars welcomed Deion Deng to the Boys Hope home this month. Deion is a BHGH collegian from University of California – Davis, where he is studying electrical engineering. He will spend two months working with the scholars. Greg Scruggs, a former scholar from the BHGH Cincinnati affiliate and current player for the Chicago Bears, spent an evening with the residential scholars this month. Greg is a recent transplant to Denver and connected with BHGH Colorado shortly after arriving. The scholars are excited to have someone that understands their life as scholars, and has done great things with the opportunity he was given. Our Regis Jesuit juniors were treated to dinner with Kenneth Stable, a BHGH of Colorado alum and new board member, earlier this month.

Adan, Javier and Victor began the first two weeks of their spring semester at St. Therese Catholic School in Aurora. The boys selected the school as their service site for their Regis Jesuit junior year service commitment. They worked in three different classrooms, ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. The service experience reinforced the BHGH mission of the importance of serving others, and educated the boys on how eventful working with children can be.
All three boys have plans this semester to join new clubs and teams. Every week Victor manages to complete his homework while being a part of Speech and Debate, Mock Trial and Robotics. He will soon be joining the Swimming team. Javier is looking forward to Rugby practices starting soon, and Adan is excited about becoming a member of the E-Sports club. The three juniors toured Regis University on January 29th. The boys made sure to seek out Jorge Palacios, who is a sophomore there. They are also prepping for the ACT exam. We would like to thank Vicky Winterschiedt again for her assistance with ACT logistics and getting the boys enrolled.
The scholars and residential staff celebrated Andrea and Selena’s birthdays in January. Andrea’s friends and family were able to join the dance competition and shared several cakes. She recently joined the track and field team at Regis. On January 29th, she attended the freshman retreat. This is a time for Andrea to become more ingrained in the Regis Jesuit family and enjoy spending time with her friends.
Isreal ended his first semester at Grandview in strong form. He made a lot of progress in his most challenging subjects and did well in his remaining classes. Isreal welcomed his former teacher Tyler Gross and his wife Jacqueline to dinner this month. The Grosses shared a great deal of encouragement and support for the scholars.
Aldo, Eddy and Elias are anxiously awaiting the results of their Regis Jesuit applications. The boys are looking forward to playing high school sports next year. Aldo and Elias are planning on playing soccer this spring. Eddy has been getting into top athletic form, and is deciding whether to play football or soccer next year. The boys are working hard this semester, and the residential staff are proud of their efforts over the last few months.
