Asphara’s Takeaways from College Application Boot Camp

Apshararising senior at Grandview High School

I started high school at Aurora Central, where I was selected for the Boys Hope Girls Hope program. Now, as a Grandview High School student, I am completing my scholar commitment in the Regis Jesuit High School program.

This week, I have joined all Boys Hope Girls Hope rising seniors for the BHGH College Application Boot Camp. It is not really a “camp” experience. It is more like an intensive seminar in writing college and scholarship application essays. We have writing coaches who guide us with putting our thoughts into paper. BHGH staff help us create our college and scholarship goals and design our strategies. Furthermore, we have had some great guest speakers. Amy Bertle, a Certified Financial Planner, has helped us understand student loans. Rae-Anne Mena, an Assistant Director of Admissions at St. Louis University, led us through some college admission case studies. And, Laura Steffen, Vice President of Scholar Recruitment and Selection at Daniels Fund, has spoken to us about writing a successful scholarship application. All of this has happened in 3 days, and I look forward to doing more.  For the first week of summer break, it has been a busy one!
