From the Board Chair, Mark Kiniry

KiniryMI have been fortunate to have been on the Board of Directors of Boys Hope Girls Hope for the past four years. Our mission is to provide an environment for young scholars to thrive and become men and woman for and with others, an opportunity they otherwise would not have had access. Most people can point to someone who believed in them and gave them the advice or support they needed to reach their dreams. This could be a teacher, uncle, friend or a scholarship donor. BHGH of Colorado has been doing just that for over 20 years and it’s very fulfilling to be part of such a caring community.

July 1 of this year I assumed the role of Board Chair. We have a dedicated and passionate group of Directors and I appreciate their time, talent and treasures. At our third quarter board meeting, I outlined my goals as Board Chair. First, I want to continue to grow and serve more scholars by growing our Academy Program. The Academy has been very well received, helps us serve more students and reduces our cost per scholar. Second, I want to continue to improve our financials. BHGH remains ‘fiscally responsible’; we own our homes, have no debt, operate a lean budget and we are lowering our cost/scholar. However, we do need to actively grow and broaden our donor base. Third, I plan to expand and strengthen our Board. Our mission resonates with many leaders in the community and I am sure we could benefit with their participation on the board. I’d like to share a few highlights from the past few months.

In late October my wife, Ellen, and I attended the BHGH Commitment Ceremony. The event was well done and a great opportunity to meet the scholars and their parents. Also, it is reassuring to hear the students speak to their goals and listen to parents praise their child’s commitment . In addition, the event reaffirmed my own commitment to BHGH. We are making a difference in the lives of young people in our community.

Also, as I write this message, it was announced Fr. Paul Sheridan S.J.will become the new President of Regis Jesuit High School. Many of you know that Fr. Sheridan founded Boys Hope Girls Hope in St. Louis in 1977 and oversaw it until 1995. I met Fr. briefly at our BHGH 20th Anniversary Celebration and I look forward to welcoming him to Denver. He will have his hands full with his responsibilities at Regis Jesuit but I am hopeful and confident he will be involved at BHGH.

Lastly, during this season of Thanksgiving, I want to thank all the people who make BHGH a success. BHGH is only possible due to our wonderful staff, counselors, donors, volunteers and board members. Thank you for all your efforts and I look forward to working with all of you as we ‘keep hope alive’.
