Last month I had one of the most influential trips of my life. I had the chance to go to Washington D.C. and attend the 2018 BEYA Stem Conference. It was my first time going to the East Coast. When I got there, I was not sure what to expect, but I was so thankful that I was given the opportunity to go. I met such wonderful people from the BHGH Steward Scholarship program. I love how we were given the freedom to attend different conference sections of our choice. I learned a lot. I now understand the importance of networking and how to act in a professional arena! It is not every day that you are taught how to behave in the business world, especially when you come from a low-income family.
This experience will be very helpful because in the future I will attend important meetings, and now I know what to expect and how to behave. I will feel more confident and prepared to be around professionals. Also, we were taught how to follow up with the people we had just met. This will be handy in my career as I apply for jobs, internships, and when I follow up with a proposal.
The trip was an eye opener for me. I sometimes ask myself, “How did I end up where I am?” Then I realize that hard work does pay off. Since I became a Boys Hope Girls Hope scholar, I started to push myself to see my full potential, something that I did not do before. I enjoyed meeting the professionals and hearing about their experiences. Being at the BEYA Stem Conference made me comprehend that there are many people striving for success and wanting a better tomorrow. Thank you for making this opportunity possible!
