Hi, my name is Valeria and I’m about to begin my freshmen year as a Boys Hope Girls Hope Scholar at Aurora Central High School. I first learned of BHGH when Emily came to South Middle School to tell the eighth graders about the BHGH program. I was very interested because BHGH gives kids a lot of opportunities, especially kids like me. My family and I moved from Honduras when I was 9 years old.
Even though high school hasn’t officially started yet, I already feel like part of the BHGH community. In June, I participated in the BHGH Summer Program. Our theme this summer was “Arts, Design, and Digital Marketing.” Two of my favorite field trips were to the Downtown Aurora Visual Arts (DAVA) Studio where we learned how to create pottery on a kiln, and to the Denver Art Museum, where we learned about careers in graphic design from the amazing creative team at the museum.
I also loved our time outdoors this summer. We toured the Teens, Inc., a summer youth employment program where teens learn about leadership and environmental stewardship. We also went on a group hike to St. Mary’s Glacier where we challenged each other on races down the glacier. I am happy to say that I won every time!
As high school approaches, I am looking forward to making new friends, joining the soccer team, running for student council, and continued adventures with Boys Hope Girls Hope. I’ll be sure to check back in with you later!
