Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado gives children ages 10 to 14 a ladder to the light. This local nonprofit provides two homes for boys and girls separately, private high school education, caring supervision, tutoring, mentoring and college scholarships.
Families elect to put their children in these values-based Boys Hope Girls Hope homes. One hundred percent of the kids who stick with the program go to college.
“The trick is getting to high school graduation,” said Mary Tharp, executive director. “Our program is voluntary – and sometimes, when they turn 16 or 17, kids want to leave for a more unstructured environment.” Still, to date, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado has sent 10 kids to the college and/or to serve in the military.
“Without Boys Hope, I would have ended up in a gang, selling drugs, and going to jail,” said a recent Creighton University and Boys Hope Girls Hope graduate.
That gives Tharp hope. “We know we’re changing lives,” she says. A $1,000 donation would defray the homes’ $15,000 yearly food bill, or help fund school books, which cost $6,000 a year.
