Amy Bertle

This month, we highlight the work of Amy Bertle, who has been providing financial literacy training to the scholars at Aurora Central High School

How long have you been a volunteer with Boys Hope Girls Hope and how did you get involved with the organization?
I believe I started volunteering with Boys Hope Girls Hope in Fall, 2018. I teach financial literacy to the freshman scholars at Aurora Central High School. I create my own lesson plans to instruct the scholars the fundamentals of personal finance. I teach them about budgeting, student loans, and building a financial foundation. My program has also been expanded to the Regis Jesuit scholars through other volunteers.

How did you find out about Boys Hope Girls Hope?
An advisor I used to work with was a Boys Hope Girls Hope sponsor and after hearing about BHGH’s mission, I wanted to help. I believe that education is key to building a better life. Boys Hope Girls Hope provides a support system not only in high school but throughout college as well. I am so glad a program like this exists.

What has been your most memorable experience volunteering with Boys Hope Girls Hope?
I helped a few graduating seniors calculate possible student loans for the different college they were considering. I believe I made a true impact on their future by walking them through the actual costs of these loans and what one college choice over another college could mean. I will never forget that.
