Throughout the month of June, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado (BHGHCO) scholars have been engaged in a number of activities that have them out and about even more than usual! Summer is the perfect time for these in-depth interactive opportunities that can be difficult to schedule during the regular academic year due to our scholars’ classroom and extracurricular commitments.

CSU Spur

BHGHCO collaborated with Dane Stickney from CU Denver to adapt his Transformative Student Voice Curriculum for our scholars over five days at CSU Spur.

Scholars learned how to identity a social justice issue that impacts their community—could be within their school or beyond but must speak to their own experience.

They participated in interactive workshops to identify the issue they want to work on, learn about research methods, data analysis and come up with an action plan or develop a policy proposal addressing needed changes surrounding an issue.

They worked in groups of 6-10 scholars and came up with 6 different projects.

Tech Leadership Summit

BHGHCO scholars visited the downtown Denver office of World Wide Technology for a Tech Leadership Summit. Employees shared about themselves and how they got to where they are today. They spent time with scholars discussing the importance of mentorship and how mentors helped them find their passion in technology.

Summit speakers then hosted a panel where they spoke to students about artificial intelligence and cyber security. Panelists also spoke to scholars about how all roads lead to technology, and how technology is a part of everything in today’s society.

The summit ended with a tour of the World Wide Technology Office.

Camp Miniwanca

In mid-June, seven BHGHCO scholars attended the American Youth Foundation’s National Leadership Conference at Camp Miniwanca.

This annual eight-day conference brings students together to develop, practice, and implement leadership skills that they can use throughout their lives.

Scholars are encouraged to attend all four years that they are in high school to build on their skills and complete the full program.

Junior Achievement

BHGHCO scholars went to the Daniels Fund Junior Achievement Dream Accelerator.  Takeaways included learning about Colorado visionaries and picturing their strengths using selfies and word-art.

Scholars got a reality check with lifestyle decisions (what kind of car, what kind of housing) and matching that with potential salaries in their desired careers.

They also had a chance to visualize their dreams and collect some goals to attain their dreams.

Great technology!  Great experience!

Colorado Capitol Tour

Scholars visited the Colorado Capitol, visiting the house and senate and learning how they can put their advocacy into action if they choose.

They went to the top of the dome and got some great skyline photos.

A big thank you to Mike McMacken, Deputy Chief of Staff for the House Minority, for coming out and meeting with the scholars.

Lots to learn about our government!
