Thanks to the generosity of the family of Kent Swanson, Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado is proud to announce the KLS Collegiate Scholarship! For over 23 years, their commitment has impacted hundreds of scholars and collegians. Annual Scholarships will be awarded in memory of Kent Swanson, former Board Chair and longtime supporter of Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado, to scholars who are current college students or about to begin their college studies.
Who Should Apply?
Four types of scholarships will be awarded:
The first is to students who are pursuing a degree in business, mathematics, or economics. It will renew each semester/year, for as long as the BHGHCO Collegians meet the requirements of their Boys Hope Girls Hope scholarship, including the probation semester if that occurs.
The second is to BHGHCO Collegians who are majoring in computer science or engineering. This award will also renew each semester/year, for as long as the Collegian meets the requirements of their Boys Hope Girls Hope scholarship, including the probation semester if that occurs.
The third scholarship will provide assistance to a BHGHCO Collegian who may not be pursuing one of the above degrees but has demonstrated exceptional scholarship in another field. This is also a renewable award.
The final award is for a BHGHCO Collegian who has a long or short-term need created by circumstances beyond their control. This award may or may not renewable based on the situation and will be made only when such a circumstance arises.
The scholarships will be awarded twice a year at the beginning of each semester. The scholarships in the first three categories will be $500 (per semester). There may be up to five scholarships awarded in each of these categories.
Kent Swanson was recognized as a successful businessman, but even more as a skilled and caring mentor to people who worked for him and to many with whom he worked after he retired. It was a role he valued deeply. He said, “This is the best thing I get to do”. To recognize Boys Hope Girls Hope of Colorado alums who follow in Kent’s footsteps, an award for mentoring has also been established. It will be given to a graduate of the program who has taken on significant mentoring in his or her personal or professional life. Candidates may be nominated by anyone who has witnessed the mentoring or been the beneficiary of it. The nomination should be submitted to the Executive Director of Boys Hope Girls Hope. The award may not be made every year, but when it is, it will be a $2,500 award.
- Applicants must be a BHGHCO Collegian in good academic standing and in their 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year of study.
- For Collegians with a standard 5-year major, 4th year students may apply.
- Applicants must have majors in business, mathematics, economics, computer science or engineering or exceptional scholarship in another major.
- First year students are eligible to apply.
- KLS Collegiate Scholars must meet the requirements of their Boys Hope Girls Hope scholarship, including the probation semester if that occurs.
Steps to Apply

- Submit one letter of recommendation from a BHGH Team Member who has worked with you directly. You also have the option to request a letter of recommendation from a faculty member, advisor, or coach from your current college or university. This letter of recommendation should describe your work ethic, your commitment to character development, and highlight your community service/volunteerism.
- Submit a screenshot or PDF of your Spring 2024 transcript indicating your semester GPA.
- Submit a short essay (maximum of 500 words, 1 page, typed, double-spaced, 12-point font) that expresses your response to the following: In what ways do your core values impact your academic growth in your field of interest?
